Description

A work by Yannis Kopsinis was removed from the exhibition ‘The Weight of Things’ held in Patras in the 2006 European Capital of Culture context. The work consisted of a Muslim prayer rug, photographic reconstructions of the bombing of Lebanon, and a cross-shaped freezer with a dead sheep inside. According to an article in α-contemporary art review, opinions on the reasons why the work was removed vary: ‘The organising authority’s position was that the sheep had begun to smell (which was certainly a plausible excuse which crosses the line between representation and reality — at the time of ‘Outlook’, the Ministry of Culture could not have claimed that the semen had started to smell). The artist himself complained that his work had been ‘sacrificed’ (most fittingly for a lamb), because it “offended some people’s religious sentiments”.’
