Description

The “Equestrian statue of Alexander the Great” (1958) was the first monumental work that the Municipality of Florina awarded to the distinguished sculptor and Athens School of Fine Arts professor, Dimitris Kalamaras. The work was never installed in public space in Florina, since the depiction of Alexander the Great was considered “nationally degrading” by the local authorities. The absence of a “robust” or “heroic” element did not satisfy their aesthetic criteria. The constant interventions on the part of Bishop Augustine Kantiotis of Florina were decisive in the statue ultimately not being installed.
